To All the Boys I've Loved Before

Gazing out the window of French class, Lara Jean notices Josh walking off to eat lunch by himself. This worries Lara Jean, and she wonders what happened with his group of guy friends. Lara Jean realizes that Josh must be lonely too.

Josh stops Lara Jean on the way into her house after getting off the school bus. Josh tells her that he can always give her a ride, that it would be more convenient than Peter driving her to and from school. Then, Josh reveals what he really wants to talk about. He tells her he thinks she’s been avoiding him ever since Margot broke up with him. Lara Jean is shocked, as she fully expected him to mention the letter. Now, Lara Jean wonders if her letter meant anything to him at all. Josh says that Lara Jean is one of his best friends, and he doesn’t want to lose her, too. For Lara Jean, “It’s the ‘too’ that’s the sticking point […] Because if he hadn’t said ‘too’, it would be about me and him. Not about me and him and Margot” (166). When Josh does bring up the letter, Lara Jean quickly changes the subject and says she will always be his friend.
