Part 2, Chapter 17 Summary

Locke shows up on Monday morning seemingly frustrated with the case she and Briggs are currently working. She and Dean teach Cassie the importance of victimology—the study of why a particular victim was targeted and what impact the crime had on the victim—which reminds Cassie again of her mother’s crime scene. She knows her mother would have fought her attacker or gone with him, especially to protect Cassie. Briggs arrives to update Locke on their case, so he tries to speak to her privately, away from the Naturals. However, when Cassie reminds Briggs that he once consulted with young Dean, Locke tells Briggs that he can speak openly in front of them. Locke and Briggs leave to follow case leads, and Locke instructs Cassie to read old prison interviews while they are gone because she feels Cassie is not ready to work with cold cases yet. Dean reassures Locke that Cassie can handle anything, which surprises Cassie since he has not spoken to her since their kiss. She also notes that he pointedly objects to Cassie reading the prison interviews.
