The Last to Vanish

Prior to the start of Chapter 21, facts about Abigail Lovett’s appearance in Cutter’s Pass are supplied in a fact sheet. Abby first arrived in Cutter’s Pass on Main Street on January 7, 2013, outside the Last Stop Tavern.

Abby’s mother revealed the name of Abby’s father shortly before passing away. She told Abby that Neil was a member of the Fraternity Four and that she had met the group of men while they vacationed in Tennessee. Until Celeste’s confession, Abby believed Neil intentionally disappeared to escape unwanted fatherhood. Abby traveled to Cutter’s Pass on icy mountain roads, assuming no one would notice if she disappeared. Celeste tried to turn Abby away when Abby initially sought refuge at the inn, also requesting a job. Upon learning Abby’s name and that her mother had recently died, Celeste decided to shelter and care for Abby to atone for her involvement in the disappearance of Abby’s father. Abby never questioned Celeste’s decision to lie to the people of Cutter’s Pass about a family relationship between Abby and Celeste.

Back in the present, Celeste confesses to killing Brian out of self-defense. While Neil pleaded for his life, Celeste jumped for Brian’s gun, causing him to shoot Neil.
