Part 4, Chapter 4 Summary

Adri is upset when she finishes reading the journal and letters, which don’t provide a satisfying conclusion to Catherine’s and Lenore’s experiences. She looks at the first postcard she found, noticing a disparity in the dates. Lenore’s last letter, written before she was going to leave for America, was dated June 14, 1919, but the postcard announcing her arrival is dated May 7, 1920.

Hearing a laugh, Adri goes downstairs and finds Lily playing cards and drinking with four friends. Adri asks if Lily knows anything about the Godspeeds, and Carol, one of Lily’s friends, says she has heard a local story about how Catherine and Beezie died from dust pneumonia. Lily has heard of the Ragbag Fair, but she cannot remember what she knew about it.

During the week, Adri borrows Lily’s SUV to drive to Wichita for her training. She excels in training but remains isolated from her crewmates. However, she feels connected to Beth, Lenore, Catherine, and Beezie, noticing the remnants of their lives in the house and searching for more clues about what happened to them. Lily suggests that Adri look for information at the local library.

The librarian recognizes Adri from a newspaper article, but Adri avoids the topic.
