1. At the start of the story, Elena watches the old Jewish couple. While they occasionally fight, they care for each other deeply until the husband dies. Conversely, Elena watches the deep divide between Eugene’s parents, who enforce traditional gender roles. Despite this, Elena imagines a future with coffee and books with Eugene.
